Frequently Asked Questions

Only outgoing transactions count toward the Basic Account's 15 included transactions; deposits and incoming transfers are free. Bill payments, withdrawals, outgoing transfers and other outgoing banking transactions done through an ATB automated banking machine (ABM), calls to Client Care or through telephone banking or our digital platforms all count toward the 15 transactions included with the Basic Account.

Global Transfers are not included in these 15 transactions and have a standard fee associated with them.

If you think your online and mobile banking activity will exceed 15 transactions per month on a regular basis, you may want to consider the Unlimited Account or the No-Fee All-In Digital AccountTM.

If your regular banking activity exceeds 15 transactions per month, you will pay:

  • $1.25 for each in-branch withdrawal or transfer
  • $2.50 for each in-branch bill payment ($1.25 payment fee plus $1.25 withdrawal fee)
  • $1 per cheque
  • $1 for each electronic withdrawal or transfer

Transactions done through Client Care are considered as manual transactions, and the same charges as in-branch transactions apply. ABM and telephone banking transactions are considered as electronic transactions. Transactions via non-ATB ABMs will be charged an additional fee. For details, see Additional Services and Associated Charges.

Within Alberta, you pay regular fees at non-ATB ABMs. You should be notified of these fees and prompted to approve them before proceeding with the transaction.

Withdraw cash at any ABM outside Alberta, but within Canada on our dime. We'll reimburse you up to a maximum of $4.50 for one withdrawal each month.

Travelling outside of Canada? Withdraw cash at any ABM on the Cirrus®  network for a fee of $5 per withdrawal (this does not include fees you may agree to pay when making the withdrawal at the non-ATB ABM).2

After you’ve applied and been approved for Overdraft Protection, you won’t pay for it unless you decide to use it. If Overdraft Protection is used, there is a minimum charge of $4 or interest, whichever is greater. Interest is calculated daily on the daily closing overdrawn balance at 17.25% per annum, charged and payable monthly.1

Overdraft Protection is only available by application and on approved credit.

Yes, you can. The Basic Account can be a joint account, and applications can be done online.

To be eligible for the monthly fee waiver on the Basic Account, clients must self-identify and meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the Government of Canada. An eligible client is part of one of the following government programs and is able to provide supporting documents:

  • Retirement Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)
  • Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH)
  • Canada Disability Benefit
  • Guaranteed Income Supplement

Accounts may be in single or joint names.

If you open your Basic Account online, you’ll need to connect with an ATB team member to provide supporting documentation. You can do this by booking an appointment online, in-person or virtually, or by visiting any ATB branch.

If you open your Basic Account with an ATB team member, please have your supporting documentation ready at the time you complete your account application.
One of the following documents is required to confirm your eligibility:

  • Government-issued documentation confirming receipt of government deposit
  • Most recent two months of direct deposit of eligible government deposit
  • Cheque stub confirming receipt of eligible government deposit dated within the last two months

Proof of enrollment can be provided to an ATB team member in these formats:

  • Original copy
  • Photocopy
  • Faxed or scanned copy
  • Legible picture of acceptable proof of enrolment taken with a smartphone or camera
