Our business grew, but our bank didn't

How the Visionary Husbands moved their business and personal banking to ATB, helping them plan for the future and support their growth.

Our life grew, but our bank didn't.

That is the sentence that started the whole conversation for us. Not because anything went dramatically wrong. Our old banking setup had worked fine for the version of our lives that set it up. But that version was smaller. Since then, we had grown a business, Visionary Properties Canada, and taken on Bradley Forest Lodge, our cabin at the lake. Somewhere along the way, our banking stopped matching where we were headed, and we could feel it every time we tried to do something new.

The moment it really clicked was embarrassingly ordinary. We were trying to get organized around Bradley Forest Lodge, and every piece of the puzzle seemed to live somewhere different. It wasn't that anyone had done anything wrong. It was that the setup had been built for a simpler time, and we weren't living in that simpler time anymore. Our life had gotten bigger, and our banking hadn't kept up.

If we are honest, we put the decision off for a while. Not because anything was wrong, but because change felt big when our personal finances and our business accounts were tied up with the same bank. And setting up a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) felt like a big decision, too. We had questions: Is this the right move for us? What does it actually change? What are we really signing up for? We didn't want a sales pitch, we wanted someone to walk through both sides with us.

What we were looking for, once we actually said it out loud, wasn't a better account. It was a partner. Someone who understood where our life and business was heading and could help us plan for that, not just process what we already had. That was what stood out about ATB when we started exploring the move. It felt like a partnership, not just an account. The conversations were about our goals first and the products second, which is probably why the whole thing felt less intimidating than we expected.

So we moved our business banking to ATB, and our mortgage too. Once everything was in one place, the conversation opened up in a way it never had before: the mortgage, the equity we had built in our home, what we could do next. That is when the HELOC became part of the picture, not as the reason for switching, but as a natural next step once we were actually talking about our bigger financial life.

Here is the part that made it feel real. We had never owned a cabin before. Things pop up with a cabin. Like, if our furnace broke down, and it did. That is exactly why we set up a HELOC as our backup. It is not money we plan to spend. It is knowing we can handle whatever comes up next at Bradley Forest Lodge, without that sinking feeling in our stomachs. That is honestly comforting, and it changed how we think about our cabin. Instead of worrying about the next surprise, we can actually plan for what is next.

If there is advice in here for other entrepreneurs whose financial setup feels like it belongs to a smaller version of their life, it is this: switching banks isn't necessarily about being unhappy. For us, it was about growth. Your life changes, your business changes, and the people and tools supporting you should be able to change too. Ask the questions. Have the conversations. And find a partner who is as interested in where you are heading as you are.

Having a branch near the lake doesn't hurt, by the way. But that is not why we switched. We switched because our life grew, and we wanted our banking to grow with it!
