Frequently asked questions
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (or GIC) is an investment that offers a guaranteed rate of return over a specific period of time. This helpful article can help you learn more about a GIC, and if it is the right investment product for you.
To open a FHSA GIC, you can visit your local ATB branch or book an appointment with one of our advisors online when and where it works for you.
Please note, to open a FHSA GIC, you must first open a FHSA Daily Interest Account. That way, when your GIC matures, it can be deposited into the FHSA Daily Interest Account without you incurring any withdrawal fees or taxes3.
No, with our FHSA GIC you need to make a minimum deposit of $500.
However you are able to open our FHSA Daily Interest Account, without an initial deposit. Learn more about this FHSA account type here.
You will get notified by mail 30 days prior to your GIC maturity date. Within this time you will be able to give us new investment instructions, or allow an auto-renew into a similar product. However, without reinvestment instructions on your maturity date your FHSA GIC will be transferred into your FHSA Daily Interest Account.
You can redeem the FHSA GIC before the maturity date. The FHSA GIC has no fees or penalties for early withdrawals at any time. Please note, you will first need to redeem your FHSA GIC into your FHSA Daily Interest Account. Once your investment is in your FHSA Daily Interest Account you will be able to make a withdrawal from that account2.
You can contribute up to $8,000 per calendar year, up to a lifetime maximum of $40,000. Your contribution room starts in the year you first open an FHSA. You can carry up to $8,000 of unused room forward to the next calendar year. Please note, if you hold multiple FHSA plan’s at different banks the total amount you contribute annually across all FHSA plans cannot exceed the $8,000 contribution room.
Yes—with certain limitations.
Any unused contribution room can be carried forward, but it can only be carried forward to the next calendar year. The maximum amount of unused FHSA contribution room that can be carried forward to the next year is $8,000. Beyond that, it is not cumulative.
For example, if you open your FHSA in December 2023 and contribute $3,000, your FHSA carryforward will be $5,000 ($8,000 minus $3,000). Your FHSA participation room in 2024 will be $13,000, calculated as follows:
$8,000 (current year) plus $5,000 (FHSA carry forward from 2023) = $13,000
You can learn more about our available FHSA options here.

The deadline for the 2026 tax year is Thursday, December 31, 2026.

The ATB Financial FY27 Registered Deposit Offer (the “Offer”) runs from October 19, 2026, to March 1, 2027 (the “Offer Period”). By participating in this Offer, eligible clients can earn a one-time cash bonus ranging from $100 to $10,000 depending on the cumulative net value of external funds transferred into eligible ATB Daily Interest (DI) registered accounts during the Offer Period, subject to the conditions outlined below. Transfer requests must be formally initiated through ATB (via an ATB team member) between October 19, 2026, and March 1, 2027, and received by ATB no later than March 31, 2027, to qualify. Clients transferring funds into DI registered accounts may also allocate or move those funds into an eligible Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) while remaining eligible for the Cash Bonus.
Eligibility Criteria
This Offer is open to Canadian residents who have reached the age of majority in Alberta and hold a new or existing eligible ATB Registered Daily Interest account. Eligible DI account types include Tax-Free Saver Account, Registered Retirement Savings Plan Daily Interest Account, First Home Savings Account and Locked In Retirement Account. RRSP Builder accounts are excluded from this Offer. This Offer is available exclusively to individual account holders; joint account ownership is strictly excluded for this Offer.
To qualify for a Cash Bonus, clients must transfer a minimum cumulative net amount of $10,000 (across up to four eligible DI accounts) in registered funds from one or multiple external financial institutions into up to four (4) eligible ATB DI account types during the Offer Period. Qualifying funds may be transferred into any combination of eligible ATB registered account types (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, LIRA), regardless of the registered account type held at the transferring financial institutions. Internal transfers from existing ATB Financial, ATB Wealth, or ATB Daily Interest accounts are strictly excluded. Clients are solely responsible for monitoring their personal CRA contribution and transfer limits across all registered plans. ATB Financial assumes no responsibility or liability for any tax penalties or excess contribution charges incurred.

Payouts will only be deposited into the following eligible chequing account types: ATB Advantage, Unlimited, Basic, Generation and No-Fee All-In Digital accounts.
Retention & Hold Period
All external funds transferred in to qualify for this Offer must remain in the eligible registered account(s) until February 29, 2028. The final Cash Bonus amount will be calculated based on the net cumulative value of eligible transferred funds remaining in the account through February 29, 2028 (total qualifying external transfers-in minus any withdrawals or external transfers-out made during the offer and retention period). If withdrawals reduce the cumulative net amount below $10,000, the client will be disqualified from receiving a Cash Bonus.
Transfer Fee Reimbursement Policy
ATB Financial will provide a flat $150 reimbursement per client for external transfer-out fees incurred at another financial institution on qualifying account transfers valued at $10,000 CAD or greater initiated during the Offer Period. Eligible transfers will be tracked and qualified.
Payout & General Terms
The Cash Bonus and any applicable $150 transfer fee reimbursement will be combined and will be credited directly to the client's active ATB chequing account as a single, one-time lump-sum payment between March 1, 2028, and March 31, 2028. Early payouts will not be issued prior to this set period. Limit of one (1) Cash Bonus payout per client, provided all qualification criteria conditions are met. Offer cannot be combined with any other promotional deposit or transfer offers unless explicitly authorized by ATB Financial. ATB Financial reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify, extend, or suspend this Offer, or amend these Terms & Conditions, in whole or in part, at any time without prior notice.
